A New Year in a New Band Room
An enthusiastic group of students have started learning to play band instruments at Lakewood Elementary. About 140 new students are divided into three bands of 45-50 and meet every third day for band and a short lesson. Our new band room, instrument storage room, practice room and office/studio is proving to be very conducive to learning and making music.

The May Band of the Month is our day 3 and 6 group, consisting of 29 musicians from the classes of Mrs. Tobey and Mrs. Krichau. The instrumentation has good variety, but is a little heavy on trumpets. (A good opportunity to teach them to control their sound--all of you parents would appreciate this at home, I'm sure.)

Band of the Month
January's band of the month is our largest group, which meets on days 1 & 4. These fine and committed musicians represent the classes taught by Mrs Hegland, Mr. Ramthun, and Mrs. Nichols. These home room teachers, like all of you parents reading this, are very supportive and encourage them to work hard, stick with it, and remember to bring their instruments on band days.
This band has a total of 47 students and is quite well balanced, which makes it easier and more enjoyable to rehearse our concert music:
Flute: 5
Clarinet: 10
Alto Sax: 7
French Horn: 1
Trumpet: 11
Trombone: 4
Baritone Horn: 1
Tuba: 1
Percussion: 6
We are currently working on three pieces of band music for our February 16th concert and plan to add at least two more before then. One of these will be Midnight Mission, by Brian Balmages, which is the opening tune of his Midnight Suite and will be followed by Midnight Sky, and Midnight Madness.
